The Indian Ziegler rug is a testament to the enduring legacy of cross-cultural design, drawing inspiration from the celebrated Ziegler style. Originally popularised in the late 19th century by Persian artisans, this style has been reimagined by skilled craftspeople in India, who honour the tradition through meticulous hand-knotting techniques. The rug’s wool pile and cotton foundation speak to a dedication to quality and authenticity, ensuring that each piece is not only beautiful but also durable.
In examining the rug’s intricate design, one is immediately drawn to the harmonious palette of soft beige and muted reds, interspersed with subtle greens and blues. The central field is adorned with large floral motifs, possibly inspired by the Shah Abbasi design, known for its elegant and stylised floral patterns. The border complements this with a series of smaller, repeating floral elements, creating a cohesive and balanced aesthetic. The careful arrangement of these motifs reflects a deep understanding of symmetry and proportion, hallmarks of traditional Ziegler design.
This expansive rug is ideal for a spacious sitting room or a grand dining area, where it can serve as both a luxurious foundation and a focal point. Its understated elegance and cultural resonance make it a versatile addition to any décor, offering a touch of historical charm and artistic sophistication. By welcoming this rug into your home, you are not merely acquiring a decorative piece but embracing a story woven through time, destined to become a cherished part of your family’s legacy.

How do I care for my handmade rug or carpet?
Handmade Persian and Oriental rugs should be vacuumed regularly, we always recommend that where possible you should use the suction-only setting on your vacuum as it is more gentle on the pile and will help prolong the life of your rug. However we do recognise that most people will use the brush bar and this of course does a more thorough job.
Key is to ensure the rug does not become overly dusty a small dust and debris particles like sand can be sharp and can cut through the fibres over time.
We do suggest you be careful nearer the tassels (fringes) and sides (selvages) of the rug as these get caught in a vacuum.
On top of this we recommend professional rug cleaning every 5 years or so, this will help remove ingrained dust and dirt and refresh the rug, ensuring it maintains its looks for years and even generations to come.
