The mountain town of Ahar is located far to the north-west of Iran near Heriz.
In fact the rugs made here are very similar to their counterparts in Heriz. They tend to have a central medallion (often with eight points) with a smaller medallion inside. The designs are almost identical to those from Heriz but for a more curvaceous appearance. The foundation is cotton or cotton and wool with thick, rugged knots making up the wool pile. Colours used tend to be a muted blend of pastel red, ivory, brown and light blue. The size of a normal Ahar rug is medium although larger versions can sometimes be acquired. The rugs are of a good, rugged quality. A knot count of 120 KPSI should be considered good for these rugs.
