Sarouq (Sarough/Sarouk) is a village located in the province of Markazi in central Iran. The rugs made here are well known and are designed with either geometric or curvilinear patterns. They controversially come in traditional and American styles. These new styles, created with the American market in mind, are often seen as tainted by collectors and purists as they move on from their traditional roots.
Sarouq rugs are built on a cotton foundation with good quality wool cut to a medium length making up the pile. The original older, and most expensive rugs, are hard woven with top quality lustrous wool which is cut very short. Colour is made up from strong red, blue, burnt orange, black, ivory or champagne. Knot counts range on average from about 120 KPSI to 450 KPSI. Sarouq rugs are in great demand both in Iran and through export to Western and European countries.
