Arak, formerly known as Sultanabad, is the capitol of the Arak province.
The history of carpet making goes back centuries in this industrial centre. The ‘Ziegler’ design was created here when representatives from Zeigler and Co. went on expedition to Iran in an attempt to create a Persian rug which was toned down to western taste. Although not uncommon in older or antique pieces, silk pile and silk foundations are rarely seen in new Arak carpets. The warp is mostly cotton; the weft either cotton or wool. Cotton is most common; goat hair is occasionally used for the foundation. The design varies with Arak rugs, many consider them to be similar to the top Sarouk rugs but of lesser quality. Although not as high in quality their desirability in the marketplace is soaring, particularly in America, they are some of the most sought after designs in the market. Main colours are dark red, blue, soft green and ivory. The rugs are typically mid-to-large in size. Average knot count is around 120 KPSI.
