The Afshari people live around the Sirjan area and the north of Kerman in south-east Iran.
The nomads and villagers of this tribe have Turkman origins and were once a powerful people. Afshari rugs often have rectangular designs but there are no distinguishing marks to separate them from other nomadic designs. They are of good quality but it is difficult (as with most tribal rugs) to find a good rug in excess of 5x8 feet although runner rugs are often woven by the Afshari. Most Afshari rugs are based on natural colours with light red, ivory and khaki. The foundation is normally cotton with thin but well textured wool making up the pile. Many Afshari rugs are flat-woven.
