Isfahan, located in the centre of Iran has a rich history and in the reign of Malekshah Saljooghi and Shah Abbas was selected as the capitol city. The history of rug making in Isfahan has been interrupted on several occasions due mainly to military occupation.
Authentic Isfahan rugs are of an excellent quality; using soft wool and a very tight pile. The most popular design is a central medallion surrounded by whorls (vines) or flowers which are usually red, blue or indigo on an ivory background. The KPSI can be anywhere from 120 upwards. Many quality Ishahans are based on silk foundations, because of this they are extremely fine and valuable. Sizes vary but most are mid to large in size.
